Kisean Paul Anderson aka Sean Kingston is a music artist mostly known for a 2000’s R&B hit song, “Beautiful Girls”.

Having this stardom led to brands providing products to Anderson in order to boost sales through association with the popular star. However, things did not go as planned for some brands who were contacted by Anderson with intent to buy their product.

According to evidence presented at Anderson and his mother’s trial, between April 2023 and March 2024, Anderson contacted the victimized companies through social media to purchase high-end merchandise. After negotiating deals, Anderson invited sellers to one of his homes in Broward County. During the meeting Anderson offered to feature the seller’s products on his social media and potentially refer other celebrity clients to the seller. When payment was due, the victims were given fake wire receipts, and no funds were ever transferred from legitimate bank accounts. The only victim to be paid received payment after filing lawsuits or involving law enforcement.

This is a common type of theft. A fraudster will initiate the purchase of a product method with the promise of a later payment or using a payment method that takes days to clear. The product will then be received by the fraudster and, when the seller tries to receive payment at a later date, they get no response or funds that will not clear.

One method imposed by companies to combat this type of fraud is through only accepting specific payment methods. Some companies only accept debit payments before providing products or services, and others accept only cash payments. In business, being proactive at placing procedures in place to mitigate risk help protect against fraud.
